How to Find Your Content Niche and Stick to It: A Guide for New Creators
If you were invited on a podcast or TV show, what would you want to be known as? This simple question is the key to finding your content niche.
Your niche is the unique space you carve out for yourself in the world of content creation. It's what helps you stand out, find your audience, and connect with people who care about what you have to say. But if you're just starting out, it can feel a bit overwhelming to figure out where to focus.
Start With What You Love
The most important thing when finding your niche is passion. If you’re creating content about something you’re not excited about, burnout is inevitable. But what if you love a bunch of things? It’s still possible to find a niche!
Start broad—something like “interior design,” “gardening,” or “wellness”—and then narrow it down. Think of it like a tree. Write your broad idea in the middle and break it down into smaller branches. For example, if you're into houseplants, focus on specific types like succulents, cacti, or terrariums. If you love gardening, you could specialise in container gardening or no-dig gardening. Narrowing it down makes you unique, and it’s easier to grow from there.
Don’t Be Afraid To Get Specific
Narrowing your niche doesn’t mean you’re locked in forever. It actually helps you stand out more. If you're into cooking, focus on “quick meals for a 9-5” or “vegan comfort food.” If fitness is your thing, narrow it down to “home workouts for busy parents” or “beginner yoga.” The more specific you get, the easier it is to connect with your ideal audience. And always stay true to yourself—don’t create content just to jump on trends. Be real.
Make Your Niche About You
Your niche is as much about you as it is about the topic. I started with houseplants, but as I shared more of my personality, my content evolved into gardening, lifestyle, and interior design—all with plants in the mix.
Your niche will naturally grow to reflect who you are. Don’t worry about being an expert (I still kill a lot of plants)—just be authentic, and your voice will shine through.
Be Consistent, But Flexible
Once you find your niche, consistency is key. Create a content schedule that works for you and stick to it. But don’t be afraid to evolve. As you learn more about your audience—and yourself—you’ll naturally refine your niche. This evolution is a good thing! It keeps things fresh for both you and your followers.
Finding your niche doesn’t mean having everything figured out from day one. It’s about starting with what excites you, staying authentic, and allowing your personality to come through. Begin with a broad idea, narrow it down, and build from there.
As you grow, your niche will naturally evolve. And above all, be real—your audience is here for you.
