Why You Don’t Need a Massive Plant Collection to Be a Plant Lover (and Why Less is More)

When I first got into plants, I felt this pressure to build a massive collection — like I needed dozens of trendy, rare plants to be a “real” plant person. I'd scroll through Instagram, seeing creators with jungles of Monsteras and expensive Alocasias, and wonder if my little collection even counted.

But here’s the truth: you don’t need hundreds of plants to have a meaningful collection.

The more plants you have, the more time and energy they demand — and that can turn something joyful into something stressful. Instead of chasing trends, focus on plants you truly love — ones you’ve chosen because they make you happy, not because everyone else has them.

A smaller collection, filled with plants you care about, is far more rewarding than a room full of ones you struggle to keep alive. So start small, choose plants that bring you joy, and grow your collection at your own pace.

Plant care should feel good — not overwhelming.
